June 24, 2006: We are absolutely excited to set sail on 4614 with it’s brand new historic sliding gunter (gaff) rig.

The day was perfect: Sunshine, light winds (and not too many spectators - as you never know what will happen setting sails for the first time). It was like travelling backwards in time when we prepared the main sail with the long boom and sliding gunter.

Looks quite good from the distance, but we are not jet completely satisfied with the profile of the mainsail.

It is not obvious, but true that a gaff rig main has some more degrees of freedom compared with a modern Marconi rig main sail. There are more and more complicated design parameters which have strong influence on the profile of the sail in different wind conditions.

We will need probably some more iterations to design a competitive racing main.

The original digital pictures are of course in colour (as below to proof that they have been made in 2006).
